Recent Clinical and Research Advances in Childhood Epilepsy

Conference theme

Epilepsy is the most common paediatric neurological problem. The term 'epilepsy' covers a wide variety of syndromes which vary in their type of seizures, underlying cause, comorbidities, consequences, treatment requirements and prognosis.

Significant advances are being made in identifying an individual child's type of epilepsy and the overall care required. By means of lectures and discussion periods, the conference aims to provide an insight into some of these advances concerning the epilepsies encountered in neonates, infants, children and adolescents.

Implications for everyday clinical practice will be emphasised, as well as possibilities for new areas of research. The meeting will provide opportunities to exchange knowledge and to share clinical experiences.

Delegates will have the opportunity to update their knowledge and gain valuable insight into the following topics:

  • Latest developments in paediatric neuroscience encouraging an evidence-based approach to the assessment and treatment of childhood epilepsy
  • Implications of genetic factors in childhood epilepsy
  • Comparisons of epilepsy syndromes at different stages of development, their significance and their management according to modern principles
  • Avoidance of misdiagnosis of epilepsy for other conditions and vice versa
  • Importance of a comprehensive view of childhood epilepsy to include neurological, psychosocial and psychiatric aspects
  • Update on pharmacological, surgical and other approaches to the treatment of seizures
